I haven't done a commission for anyone on VHR in ages so I decided I'd give one another go. This one was for Jellybeanjo, she wanted a blue roan clydesdale mare with two white, knee high stockings doing a powerful looking extended trot. This is the result :D to me it looks more grulla...bloody roans are so hard to do haha!

Done on Photoshop 7.0.1 with a mouse, it took a few hours to do.

Did you use the smudge tool for the mane and tail? I also use a mouse.. and I can't figure out a good way to do hair without a tablet.
It's stunning!
I think the neck is off, not sure about the head (maybe just coz the neck is a little funny it puts the head off too?). It's supposed to be slightly turned towards us like it's going to flick it's head or something but I don't think I quite got it right :( oh well! thanks for the comment ;)

Thanks :) and nope I can never get the smudge to work on the fine hair, it always looks to blunt and static haha! I made a few of my own brushes then just used the brush tool, I changed some things in the Brush Presets to make it easier. I changed the spacing under 'Brush Tip Shape' to 1% and then under 'Scattering' I changed the control to fade (it varied between 20/60 depending on the forelock/feathers/tail ect). Does that help? I can probably put up some of the brushes too if that helps. I work on a really small canvas though, not sure how much of a differance that would make if you tried to follow what I just said but on a bigger canvas.

ooh, I see. I've tried the fade trick before.. I guess I need more practice. Are those the 'fur' brushes that are just a bunch of dots, but when you draw with them it creates fur-like lines if done properly? I'm the worst at explaining, but hopefully you know what I mean. I have some of those. :)
yeah that's pretty much how I've made them, I just make a few differant layers with them, each layer a differant colour and I try to make them go in similar directions or you just get a big blob of colour, it's harder with the dark colours I find. I didn't find I needed a tonne of practise to get this, maybe you should fiddle around with the brush presets a bit more? I changed a few other things depending on what I was doing.

The colouring on the head is truly amazing - I initially thought it was a photo manip with a real head and coloured body.
That is certainly a powerful trot.
